Ruth Ware

After reading “The Women in cabin 10” by Ruth Ware I wanted more behind the scenes. With Numerous of connection I got ahold of Ruth.  Ruth is based out of the United Kingdom

Where she has written numerous of books and many have been made “New York Times Best Sellers”. She is based out of the United Kingdom.

Ruth has always wanted to become a writer since she was very small but never thought  that was going to happen. She didn’t know any writers growing up and it didn’t seem like something a regular person could achieve, so she kept writing and writing but never had the courage to seriously pursue publication. Once she had kids she became more determined and realized that she needed to do something with her writing. As a situations she calls “Use is or lost”.

Inspiration goes a long way as we can use it in so many ways. I had asked Ruth if her plots and characters are based off of real life scenarios or completely out of the creative imagination. She often takes inspiration from newspaper stories or things that have happened to her friends. But the plots usually develop in radically different ways to real life situations. She also sometimes borrow traits and characteristics of people she knows or strangers she encounters, but she has never based an entire character on a single person.

A mistake she had made and advice for others, to not call a character “Will”, it’s a very difficult name to use also to find and replace if you decide to change his name!.

Advice is hard to give for many people as everyone is so different and some advice for one person may not work for a different person. Literacy is one of the biggest subjects in the world, every job you take there will be literacy involved.  Ruth states, “I think it’s universally good advice to read a lot, she’s never met a writer that doesn't read”. She also states “for beginner writers she thinks it can be helpful to have an ending in mind, it would most likely increase the chances that you would finish the book”!

As Covid- 19 affected all of us with loss of jobs, money and many other things in the past year I had asked Ruth how it has affected her, she stated “ like everyone else i’ve been battling with homeschooling my kids, lockdown which the UK just went back into lockdown along with endless doom and laden news reports. With all of that it’s difficult to find the inspiration. It’s also hard to know what people will want to read in the next two years.
